They were won by the ruling RDPC. The following presidential elections were won by Paul Biya, although the results have been disputed; the Social Democratic Front (SDF) of John Fru Ndi claims to have defeated Biya. Despite being the most important opposition group, the SDF boycotted the parliamentary elections.
